The Power of Social Media & Twitter

When North Harrow Lodge No 6557 joined Twitter back in April 2011, it’s fair to say that we had no idea what the effect on our Lodge – if any – would be.
It certainly seemed like a good way to promote the website, with which we were already beginning to have success in increasing membership numbers.
But just how much power could 140 characters really wield for an organisation that
was stuck in the relative dark age when it came to social media and technology?
Well the answer, 5900 tweets, 1716 followers and a 60 strong Twitter meet-up later, seems to be: quite a lot. And nowhere was that more apparent than on our Lodge’s annual sailing trip in July 2014.IMG_1318
Every year, members of North Harrow Lodge gather at Hamble Point Marina for a weekend of sailing around the Solent. But unlike previous years, there was an added purpose to this trip – and it was all down to a speculative tweet sent a few months earlier.
With nine members of North Harrow Lodge scheduled to arrive in Poole Marina
aboard“Janes Buoy”, a 43′ Sun Odyssey yacht, on 4th July, I made a passing comment on Twitter inviting any available brethren (the Masonic “Twitterati”) to join us for a pie and a pint on the back of the boat.
The response was immense and quite unexpected. So much so, that it soon became clear that our boat wouldn’t be big enough, and most importantly, our limited beer and pie supplies might not meet demand.IMG_1279
In light of the huge interest, WBro Brian Chidgey from Dorset kindly arranged for caterers to put on a meal at Amity Lodge in Poole.
Months passed and the numbers of attendees continued to grow, and finally the day arrived when we moored at Poole and were greeted by WBro Alex McCombie, a few other Dorset Masons and a couple of bottles of Champagne to toast our arrival.
This alone would have been a good enough result from one speculative tweet, but the best was yet to come.
Upon walking into the Amity Lodge, I was amazed to see over 60 Twitter brethren from 9 Masonic Provinces including RWBro Richard Merritt, PGM, VWBro Clive Deakin, DepPGM, WBro Nigel Leonard, APGM and other members of the Provincial Team turn up for what was to be the largest gathering of freemasons ever assembled as a direct result of Twitter.
After a couple of presentations given by WBro NigelHarris-Cooksley on the merits of social media inclusion and Bro Colin Luther-Davies on the activities of the Connaught Club, we were fed a superb four course meal. ThenOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA there was plenty of time to answer questions, chat, network and exchange views with the brethren who had travelled to be there.
It was a fantastic evening, and one we couldn’t have
arranged (or catered for) without the help of WBro Brian Chidgey, ProvGReg and his team.
Twitter hasn’t just proven itself to be a fantastic tool for Lodges to communicate with one another through. It has also enabled us to raise even more money for worthy causes.
A few months ago, WBro Paul Hughes, Somerset Provincial Social Media Officer began the Masonic Twitter pins initiative, whereby small lapel pins featuring the Masonic logo and the iconic blue bird would be made available to promote social media in Freemasonry and it was agreed that the funds raised would be donated and split equally between the 2020 Somerset Provincial Festival in aid of The Grand Charity and the 2020 Middlesex Provincial Festival for the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys.
Through the Twitter Gathering in Poole, we were able to add a further £130 to the present total, which in the first three months currently stands at a massive £3,000.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After our hugely successful night in Poole, the next day we were back on the boat and on our way to Yarmouth, the Isle of Wight, Cowes and beyond. During our last few days on the water, we had plenty of time to reflect on what was easily one of the best team building and bonding exercises North Harrow Lodge has experienced so far.
If there had ever been any question of the importance of Masonic Lodges getting involved with social media and keeping up with developments in digital technology, this trip had more than answered them. We have to move with the times in order to sustain the memberships of Lodges around the UK, stay connected and promote Freemasonry.
Twitter is just one proven way of doing it – what’s next?

Maybe a similar gathering at Freemasons’ Hall in the near future ?

We will wait and see, and in the meantime, we hope to repeat the success on our 2015 sailing trip.

North Harrow Goes Forth Sailing

On the afternoon of Thursday the 3rd July, after months of planning, the 9 North Harrow crew started to gather at Hamble Point Marina in readiness for our annual long week-end sailing trip and to wait for the imminent arrival of our Worshipful Master and skipper, W.Bro Vaughan Coleridge-Matthews, so that we could check and sign off our home for the next 4 days, “Janes Buoy” a 43′ Sun Odyssey yacht. Once aboard 20140709-231345-83625941.jpgit wasn’t long before a coudron of chilli was simmering on the stove in readiness for an easy dinner and was duly consumed along with suitable beverages.20140709-231346-83626355.jpg
It was an early start on the Friday to catch the high tide , so at 4.30am the next morning, we welcomed a beautiful dawn over the Hamble and prepared to slip lines for Poole harbour for the most important and long awaited meeting, The Twitter Gathering.20140709-231344-83624236.jpg
The tide and favourable winds eventually helped propel us along the Solent, past Hurst Narrows to the Needles where we encountered very choppy seas, and in the interests of safety the skipper decided to head directly to Poole . On arrival we were welcomed by WBro Alex McCombie holding 2 bottles of Champagne and several other twitterati ( what a wonderful “Masonic” gesture ). 20140709-231345-83625540.jpg
Then before we knew it we made our way to Amity Lodge to meet and enjoy the fellowship of the Largest gathering of Freemasons brought together by Twitter and Social Media. 20140709-231343-83623187.jpgMany thanks to Alan Ewart for taking photographs and posting a concise report which was also retweeted by UGLE. We left Poole the next morning and had a great sailing day before arriving in Yarmouth on the IoW in the afternoon where W.Bro John Martin (an ex-Middlesex Mason) joined us for a drink after which we dined at Spice, an excellent local curry restaurant.20140709-231343-83623636.jpg
The skipper allowed us a lay in on Sunday morning before heading for the national trust nature reserve of  Newtown Creek where we moored for lunch.
Before long the afternoon was upon us and it was time to sail once more across the Solent to meet the the rising tide in the Beaulieu River to Bucklers Hard  for our overnight stay. Oh !! and another pub :))

Monday dawned and it was time to head back into the Solent for our next and final stop at Cowes on the IoW, just in time for a bit of lunch and a little shopping before our return to the Hamble and home.

Personally, I believe it was one of the best team building and bonding exercises IMG_0909North Harrow Lodge has experienced so far and a great opportunity to meet and exchange views with approx 60 of our brethren including RWBro Richard Merritt, ProvGM, VWBro Clive Deakin, DepPGM, VWBro Nigel Leonard, APGM along with several members of the Provincial team and Brethren from 9 Provinces brought together through Twitter ……Roll on next year.

On behalf of the NH Crew, I would like to convey our grateful thanks to our Skipper, W.Bro Vaughan, for bringing us back safely and organising the sailing and to W.Bro Brian Chidgey, ProvGReg (Dorset) and is Team for co-ordinating the first of many very successful Twitter Gatherings.

SUCH IS THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA………..

Twitter Gathering in Poole

I made a passing comment on Twitter a few months ago concerning the North Harrow Lodge sailing week-end, where we were expecting to moor in Poole marina on the 4th July and that if any Twitterati brethren are available, they would be more than welcome to join us for a pie OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand a pint on the back of the boat. Some days later Brian Chidgey, Dorset ProvGReg  contacted me and said that the response from Local and other South Coast Freemasons had been immense and that in the light of this he had booked Amity Lodge in Poole and the caterers to put on a meal . It was then perfectly clear that the boat was not big enough.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA We arrived in Poole on the afternoon of the 4th and were welcomed by WBro Alex McCombie and a few other Dorset Masons with a couple of bottles of Champagne. What a lovely thought !!!! Well the clock struck 6pm and I was amazed to see over 60 Twitter brethren from 9 Masonic Provinces turn up for the first and largest gathering of freemasons ever assembled as a direct  result of Twitter, I was then charged with giving a PowerPoint Presentation on the merits of Social Media and Twitter, along with another of our crew, Bro Colin Luther-Davies who OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAfollowed with a presentation about the activities of the Connaught Club. This was followed by a superb meal 4 course in the dining room and great chance to have an informal chat with the brethren who had travelled to be with us. We were also honoured with the presence the RW Bro Richard Merritt, ProvGM who is known as a promoter of Social Media, gave a short speech after the meal, he was accompanied by VW Bro Clive Deakin, DepProvGM, VWBro Nigel Leonard, APGM and several members of the Provincial team.

This perfectly shows the potential power of Social Media as a communication tool. My grateful thanks IMG_0909must go to WBro Brian Chidgey ProvGReg and his team for organising such a fantastic evening and finally to WBro Paul Hughes , Somerset Provincial Social Media Officer, for the Twitter Pin initiative and for raising another £130 on the evening selling the Twitter Pins, all of which will be added to the present total of approx. £2,500 and eventually donated to The Grand Charity and the RMTGB. Pins are available on eBay

A Royal Occasion

On the evening of Thursday 12th June, nine members including partners and guests had the pleasure of attending Beating Retreat  (video) this year, an event we have supported for many years .This year the salute was taken by HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. Contingencies 20140618-223825-81505750.jpgfrom the Mounted Band of the Blues & Royals, Coldstream Guards and French Foreign Legion performed which culminated in a magnificent display of fireworks punctuated by cannon fire from The Queen’s Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery Beating Retreat has its origins in the early years of organised warfare when the beating of drums and the parading of Post Guards heralded the closing of camp gates and the lowering of flags at the end of the day.Lodge Members and Guests

An order from the army of James II of England, dated to 18 June 1690, had his drums beating an order for his troops to retreat and a later order, from William III in 1694, read:Coldstream Guards

“The Drum Major and Drummers of the Regiment which gives a Captain of the Main Guard are to beat the Retreat through the large street, or as may be ordered. They are to be answered by all the Drummers of the guards, and by four Drummers of each Regiment in their respective Quarters”.The French Legion

Beating Retreat still continues today and takes place on Horse Guards Parade each year for two successive evenings in June. The ceremony has evolved into a colourful pageant of military music and precision drill carried out by the the Mounted Bands of the Household Cavalry and the Massed Bands of the Household Division.20140618-223825-81505382.jpg

The salute is taken by a member of the Royal Family.

Twitter The Way Forward

Two years ago, I knew very little about “Twitter” the Social Media phenomenon.  I have administered my own website for many years and had set up the North Harrow Lodge website in 2010 , which has proved to be a great success as a tool for recruitment and communication. (See our Progression Sheet)2014-05-05 17.17.03

However, Twitter is also proving to be another great form of communication in promoting Freemasonry in general and our Lodge profile in particular.

Where Freemasons used to know what went on at Lodge meetings in their own Masonic Centre, or at a push, in the Province, now through Twitter,  Freemasons can now find out what’s going on in Lodges throughout Britain and other parts of the world and interact with them.

Social Media is also being embraced by U.G.L.E, where at the recent Grand Lodge Communications, proceedings were Tweeted live and where they now have a following of in excess of 5,000 and it they retweet one of your posts it immediately goes out to 5,000 other Twitter users.

More Lodges than ever are opening Twitter accounts in order to communicate with other like minded people and in most Provinces the practice is encouraged, which has resulted in thousands of Freemasons joining, bringing the fraternity closer and closer…..

2013-07-14 16.12.33Following North Harrow Lodge’s successful sailing weekend on the blogger-image-1167187633Solent over the last three years, my idea was, in the absence of any Lodges on the south coast having meetings on the 4th July weekend, to have an informal gathering of the #Twitterati on the back of the boat in Poole Marina, accompanied by fish & chips, a few beers and the odd ‘Dark & Stormy’ (Dark Rum and Alcoholic Ginger beer)

Through the interest on Twitter, this event has escalated with the help of W.Bro. Brian Chidgey, Dorset ProvGReg to at least 100 brethren gathering at the local Masonic Hall on the evening of the 4th July, where I have now agreed to give a presentation on the benefits of website and social media, followed by a meal and a few beers in the dining hall. Book in with Brian via Twitter @dorsetreg if you wish to join us.

This event is now being supported by Provincial Grand Masters and Assistant Grand Masters from most of the South Coast Masonic Provinces. Such is the power of Social Media.

IMG_0909To mark the occasion and to further the benefits of Twitter as a Social Media tool to promote Freemasonry,  W.Bro Paul Hughes, @prhughes, Somerset Provincial Social Media Officer, has produced a Masonic Twitter Pin and along with myself are making them available to all Freemasons with Twitter accounts.

They are now available to buy on eBay as well as at the event in July and have agreed that ALL PROFITS will be divided equally between the Somerset Provincial 2020 Festival in support of The Grand Charity and the Middlesex Provincial 2020 Festival in support of RMTGB, so please give generously.  Both I’m sure you will agree are worthy Masonic causes.

If you’re on Twitter, you can follow us @HarrowFreemason.

North Harrow Lodge Masked Ball

There wasn’t enough time to hang the Dinner Jacket back in the wardrobe before it was time for the highlight of any Lodge’s calendar, that of it’s Ladies’ Night , which was on the Saturday of the following weekend and was to be a ‘Masked Ball ‘ at the Runnymede Hotel, a superb venue adjacent to the River Thames. The Grand Union Suite had been booked and looked amazing and beautifully decked out for the occasion.
Over 110 members and guests accompanied by their partners, suitably dressed for the occasion in their finery and stunning masks attended the champagne reception followed by a superb meal and dancing to the “Wedge” Band until the early hours on the following morning.
A great evening was had by all and with the help of the sponsors and generosity of those present, helped to raise a record amount of just under £2000 for the nominated charities.

A Night at the East India Club

On Saturday the 5th April, members of North Harrow and their partners had the pleasure of being invited to attend Gradation Lodge 6368’s Ladies Dinner, which this year was held in a private room at the prestigious East India Club, where some 40+ guests were welcomed at a champagne reception followed by a fantastic meal. What a great evening was had by all.

Grabbing a Crafty Week off

Once in every year at a stated period , it has been an established custom for the @HarrowFreemason family to depart these shores in search of older climes and snowy conditions.

This year was no exception, so we bundled all but the kitchen sink in the back of the car and ventured once more to Meribel in the French Alps.
A trip we’ve made annually for almost 30 years…..
So the time had arrived, it was at the ungodly hour of silly o’clock when we started our 700 mile drive through France, stopping every couple of hours for a short break, a stretch of legs and a change of driver, arriving late afternoon at our prebooked hotel accommodation at the foot of the mountains in Meribel-les-Allues

After spending a couple of days in the hotel it was time to negotiate the roads to the main resort higher up the mountain only stopping to put the snow chains on for the final few hundred metres. That’s where the car stayed for the duration of the holiday.

The snow was great this year and we were able to ski almost every day in superb conditions. The holiday was booked directly through Meriski who having used them previously have offered a very high level of service, unlimited wine, beers and spirits and a chauffeur service to transport you to and from the slopes.

A week later and almost half a stone heavier it was time to dig the car out of the snow and negotiate the long drive home, back to reality !!

Can’t wait for next year 🙂

All Change at the Top

W.Bro Mason

With the announcement at the latter part of last year that our W.Bro Roger Croome QPM, Pro Provincial Grand Master was to retire at the next  Provincial meeting in May. It was open to speculation who would be his successor, but it didn’t take too long before it was announced that W.Bro Alastair Mason, Dep Provincial Grand Master,  would be his replacement. Alastair is a superb ritualist and is well versed in the running of the Province.

W.Bro Thoday

But then , the next question was “who will be his replacement” ? At the recent meeting of Middlesex Masters Lodge (Harrow) a couple of days ago, Alastair had the pleasure in announcing that W.Bro Simon Thoday APGM would be appointed the new DepProGM at the Provincial Meeting in May and that W.Bro Barry Cramer PProvDepGDC, would be appointed the new APGM.
Our hearty congratulations must go to Alastair, Simon and Barry on their appointments and we at North Harrow wish them well, as do, I am sure the rest of the Province.
Onward and upward !!!!

North Harrow moves forward in 2014

Our New Master Mason

Our last meeting on Friday 17th January was another first for North Harrow for a number of  reasons.

1. At our installation meeting last October, we installed Bro Vaughan Coleridge-Matthews as Worshipful Master of the Lodge. He was the first Master since 2001, that’s 13 years ago, to be installed for the first time.
2. At the January meeting W.Bro Vaughan performed the Raising Ceremony for Bro Mark Romero, one of two of our “Lewis” in an outstanding manner, this also was the first 3rd Degree to be performed at a Regular meeting since the W.Bro Vaughan was raised in 2008.
The Full Festive Board
3. Having increased our membership by almost 22 in the last three years to a current number of  36, it was a pleasure to have so many eager new members wanting to perform pieces of ritual at the meeting, so the traditional history was split for the first time into 5 parts, which enabled nearly all prices to be performed by lay brethren. All performing their ritual word perfectly. A special mention must be given to Pratik and Derek who shared the first part of  the Traditional History, Saeed who delivered the Alternative Signs, Simon the Tracing Board and the star, Srdjan the Working Tools. An impressive show for our Visiting Officer on his official visit.
4. The festive board was one of the largest experienced in recent times which saw 39 members and guests tuck into an exceptional meal, this was a far cry from the levels of three years ago when we were lucky to have had 20.
Some of the Stars of the show

Excellent ritual in the Temple, an excellent festive board, full of fun and fellowship.

Bro Secretary ready
to eat his hat !!!

So what next : At the March meeting we are to perform a Second Degree, which will again  involve many of our lay brethren and in May another initiation……….

That’s what North Harrow does best !! Long may it continue.
